Figurative Womb

It’s not very often that I am able to take away a meaningful message from a Bollywood flick so I had to write about it. The movie in question is Laaga Chunari Me Daag.

The story is an old chestnut overdone Bollywood-style. A family of four in a decaying mansion - the mother spinning the years away Arachne-like on the sewing machine, the idle father hoping the next lottery ticket will reverse the tide of his fortune and the two pretty daughter unequipped to seek a better future.

Taare Zameen Par - not really a review

“Every child is special” exhorts the tagline of TZP. When I sat down to watch TZP along with screaming and whimpering bunch of fledglings, I felt the tag line should read - “Every child is a rascal” ( “Can somebody please take them out ? I got a movie to watch & review” ) Alas! my silent pleas were met with more high pitched screeching & crying. I grudgingly shut them out of my mind & shifted my attention to the story unfolding on the screen.

Edit Madhuri out of Aaja Nachle

What was Madhuri doing in Aaja Nachle? It might require more soul searching than NRI Madhuri Dixit can afford. I suppose the writer and director of the movie could answer the question. But had they, rather HE, had raised the question at the onset, Madhuri wouldn’t have been there. She wouldn’t have flown in to give interviews on Karan Johar Koffee show or judge and dance in Nach Baliye. Maybe after the movie was made, Madhuri could have been edited out.

AAG

My brother and I were on our way to watch a movie, some movie, any movie that was playing on a lazy Friday afternoon. Rush Hour 3 was playing near by. When we landed there, my brother realised Ram Gopal Varma’s Sholay was releasing today worldwide. He asked why not go for it. So i thought sure, why not? After all its Ram Gopal Varma. Bought tickets and walked into the theatre.

The title of the movie
“RAM GOPAL VARMA ki AAG” was all it took to make me laugh. Varma ki AAG. Acidity hain kia be?

Lage Raho Munnabhai - Jhakaaaaas

Whats wrong with KANK

I dont say its RiGhT…But its not WrOnG…
Its a bold subject…we indians cant accept that…wel i dont say that we must leave our spouses when things go wrong. We must certainly try to compromise and live again but if nothin turns out better then its better to leave.

I read this line somewhere “Wonder how (and why the HELL!) Rani falls for this chap instead of her husband Rishi (Abhishek, nicely done!).”. The person who has written this must know this important thing that Love doesnt sees appearences, it jus sees the heart.

I don know why there were so many critisicms (Bad ones) about KANK…First of al its jus a film. People must not take it to their heart. They can ofcourse discuss but then at the end of the day you cant give one judgement which can b acceptd by al.

Omkara and KANK: "Raja" and "rank"

Omkara: an adaptation of Othello, that borders on a literary achievement.
KANK (Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna): An expensive, lavish insult to human intelligence.

True Romance - the movie

Recently I picked up the screenplay of "True Romance" written by Quentin Tarantino. I must confess, I am not a movie freak. In this day & age, I don’t own a VCD / DVD player. For that matter, I don’t even own a PC of my own.

Stephen Chow is a Freakin' Genius

(Warning - This is an aimless ramble about cinema, chinese cinema, and other stuff, and my association with all these things. There is no order or structure to what I am talking about - take it as it comes)

I was busy doing some work in front of the TV, like I am used to doing.
(I used to do all my studies in front of the television, much to the consternation of my mom, who always  warned me that I will do poorly in my exams if I continued the habit).

They were showing some Chinese movie with an atrocious title called…

Watch Rang de Basanti

Rang de Basanti is a good movie. A movie with a heart. A movie that will make you laugh a lot and allow you a tear or two. A movie with excellent music and great cinematography. A movie edited well. A movie where the roles of atleast 15 characters is well-developed, well-thought and well-defined. It is not without flaws, but it is the number of winners, that tilt the balance in a game. It is not an ace, but well thought Winner.

Runway - a Malayalam movie music sorta-review

Watched a Malayalam movie recently called “Runway”. The movie itself was forgettable. But the music was a nice surprise . For better or worse, I think the attempts by the music industry in its northern neighbor to “contemporize” has rubbed off in Kerala’s music as well - songs like “Lajjavathiye” & then the music in this movie. I haven’t been following Mallu movies for a while now, so I don’t know if this is a trend. But I’ve always associated Mallu movie tunes to the likes of the awesome classical-based music in movies like “Bharatham” & “His Highness Abdullah”. So the new music comes as a surprise to me.

A couple of reviews...

A review of a couple of good films I watched this weekend.

Metamorphosis of a Young Revolutionary Leader - The Motorcycle Diaries

“Going on a journey with a map requires following directions - going on a journey without one requires following your heart.” - Tom Krause

There is a moment in everyone’s life where you know, some part of your self has changed irrevocably. For some, it is sudden, like the loss of a family member. For some, it is a slow, mutating process inside you, like that of Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara, riding on a beat-up Motorcycle with his friend, Alberto Granado,on a 13,250km road-trip across Latin America.

Ride 50miles/hr across Chile

Paheli - a perspective

My take on paheli. Would like more discussion on this. Thanks

Paheli - not really a review..:D

I have never ventured into the ‘movie review’ territory, since you have pros like Void for that… and besides, I generally watch movies only after they get good reviews… and by the time I am ready to review, half the word would’ve seen it! This time around, for a change, we caught up with SRK’s ghost act on day two! And it was good fun…

The movie as such is ok, watchable… there is no great story line or anything… Rani Mukherji gets married to ultra romantic SRK-1, who does finance calculations even during their first night together… and leaves to God knows where on the next morning itself! And taking this opportunity, SRK-2, the Ghost, who is already in love with Rani (wonder how!), comes into the house as SRK-1!! And then the rest is usual masala…
