A bit of this, a bit of that, bit of both and most of nothing
Did you guys watch Nadan and Federer final last evening? I guess it was too late in the night for you guys but for me it was a perfect afternoon. Rarely you get to watch a match which would eventually a history as longest and one of the best to-date. To say it was superb will be an understatement I guess. I am always a Federer supporter. Not sure why though. May be because he won Junior Wimbledon when I was in Switzerland and since his photos was on all the channels and papers which I could not understand anyway but could clearly make out the pictures and read his name! May be also because I love the serve and volley games and he resembles Sampras much and probably will go down in history as one of the greatest. Its fun to watch good games and if its a great one like this, its an added bonus. There are always some games you never forget right?
I still remember the first Wimbledon finals I watched. Pat Cash won in 1987 and I remember watching it in neighbor’s place with lots of kids sitting in the living room on a black and white Solidier TV! Can’t believe its been 21 years ago. After that its been so many good games. Becker, Agassi, Steffi, Hingis, Navratilova and ofcourse Lendl who could never win a Wimbledon. Coming back to the game, even though I rooted for Federer, the sheer resolve of Nadal to come back every time he was down made me appreciate him all the more. Somehow I don’t quite like guys who win French open always but cant make it on grass but this guy should be fun to watch. The grace with which Federer accepts his defeats should put him on the top of the people I love the most. Sampras sure joins the team.
Its just apt for Wimbledon to quote the great Kipling ( IF )
in its boards
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same
Why just tennis, dont we all remember some TV moments as if it just happened. After internet, google and now youtube its fun to catch up those again on net! Try it out some time.Be it Jadeja’s catch against Pakistan in Bangalore during World Cup semi-finals or Tendulkar’s six of Akhtar in semi-finals or his back to back centuries against Aussies in Sharjah or watching unlucky Klusner on other end watching Donald batting or the look on SA’s team after they got to know 23 out of 1 ball is required.
Its amazing to think now that how we not only remember the game but also the people we were with while watching. Like when Srinath first played for India, we were all watching it in our colony club. That was the time when people had just started to have TV’s in their house but cable TV was not there yet. We always thought its fun to watch games in club rather than in our house for the sheer excitement it gives. We had all heard about Srinath by reading papers but then no Ranji trophy was ever broadcast on TV and we did not even know how he bowls and how he looks! Very first he bowled ( which I think was a wide ) , a friend remarked ‘For a bomman ( Brahmin a.k.a Veggie) , he bowls pretty fast’ .
Inspite of gaining age, intelligence and other things to know things like and thats how it is with everything, we just want to keep somethings the same. Atleast I do or atleast watching good games with friends once in a while atleast once in a year
Talking about growing up, other day this Russian guy in my office asked me out of blue to show him on Google map ( satellite ) where I grew up. Till then I had never thought I can do that so easily. Taking a look at it first made and that too from a top view was amazing. All other memories just back. Where we learnt cycling, where we swam, where we played cricket, how we went to school! Thanks to him to even show the interest on something which he probably may not see in his life. For complete two hours that day , all we did in out team was to huddle in his seat and look at each other’s home town be it in China, Russia, India or Europe!
Well, so long!

perfecto
loved it..stopped following Tennis after Sampras and Agassi…this blog made me want to follow it again!
ah! the ramblings Anantha..loved them…esp the part where your describe the priceless moments…so many of them…bought back memories..i can never forget one board that read ‘We don’t want the world cup, we want to win this match’ in the quarterfinal against pakistan in India…
Hey Ananth!!:)
Though Nadal was the better player for most part of the match, I was desperately hoping Federer would pull it off.. but it wasnt to be.. a perfect end to such a dramatic match wudv been like how Sampras won against an equally deserving Rafter in 2000, a fabulous win that made the usually emotionless Sampras break into tears.. I expected Fedex would do something like that too
But yeah, Nadal deserved it.. And I hope Fedex comes back to win it next yr..
I agree with LL too, the tone is somewhat changed, a little abrupt I think.. not the very lethargic one we are used to..
nithya
Hey,
howz the kid?! will u get hold ur apartment this year?
..same thoughts here about Fedex…wud be interesting to see next year…but something tells me that Nadal will be the next Fedex….
u mean i have become restless now? Oh well, Chander knows it all too well….shud not be a surprise for him
btw am still waiting for my painting…if u are waiting to become very famous and gift a costly one to me…thats fine….but give something now and one later too !!
LOL!
Kid is doing great.. We cudnt wait any longer for that apt (testing patience to the core), so we sold it and got another one and rented it! We were tired of apt shifting.. Chander was always restless, but u becoming so is surprising
Painting as soon as u land IS paar.. When are u back? I will definitely gift you one, dont worry
Nathan who ?
>> Did you guys watch Nadan and Federer final last evening?
Nadan as in our good ole Nathan ? When did this happen ? How come nobody told me Nathan was in Finals
Bad Joke.
Yeah I saw the match till 3+ am Sg time, thats when it was interrupted for the 2nd time.. with the game balanced at 2 sets all, 2-2 & 40-40 in the 5th set. By then i thought Federer would finish the match off and I didn’t want to see that happen coz I have been supporting Nathan errr Nadal . So i went to bed .
Next day morning, i rushed to office and I was waiting at a Coffee shop for my takeaway order of Cheese Sandwitch and Nescafe.. That was when I saw the scrolling text on the Coffee Shop TV.. “Nadal defeats Federer in Wimbledon Final” ! I immediately texted my roommate the Good News (He is an ardent Federer Supporter) I couldn’t miss the chance to rub salts on his wounds so early in the morning.
The reason why I hate Federer cause he is too perfect bordering on being in-human. No emotions.. with almost a Robot like precision.. Its like he is too good to be true. Plus I don’t like his choice of girlfriend & also I don’t like the Cardigan that he wore before the start of each match, Its too gay’ish . And although people say he is gracious in defeat et all.. But still he did mention that the Light was awful and he would have considered stopping the match had it been 8-8.. That was uncalled for, if you ask me.. Hello ? the light was bad equally for both players..
IW
lot of ppl do say they dont like someone who is too perfect….in most of the case I do too but somehow in tennis I have liked Sampras,Stefi etc who were at their peak too perfect….
btw where’s ur sister…haven’t seen or heard from her in a long time
Salonii ka suffer..
>> btw where’s ur sister…haven’t seen or heard from her in a long time
The last i heard, she was busy playing the dual role of an aadarsh Indian bahu (doing seva of her in-laws) and that of a career woman (climbing corporate ladder enroute to become the next Indra Nooyi) .
Around the world in 2 hours and for free!!!
“For complete two hours that day , all we did in out team was to huddle in his seat and look at each other’s home town be it in China, Russia, India or Europe!”
hmmm… Around the world in 2 hours and for free… I’m sure the client you are working at would claim the Nobel Prize for World Peace, because he is providing a platform for global integration
.
Point to ponder: What would have Jules Verne done with Googlemaps?
Good to see you back here with a ‘blog’ rather than with just one line comments…
anantha!!!!
You wrote this? are you sure? it didnt sound like you at all! Boy you’ve changed !!! lol! or .. maybe it’s been so long since you last wrote something that i forgot what you wrote like! hahaha… JK!
Real happy to read from you after soooo long! looks like everyone is interested in keeping dss rolling - that’s super nice! keep it coming Mr TennisMan.
and this reminded me how during the world cricket cup… aditi and her cousins explained the rules of cricket - a game we didn’t know a thing about before. and how we all were ecstatic when india won. it was awesome.
:)
did not sound like me? sure?!! is it ‘coz i have not been writing much or is something really different! anyway to tell the truth it like of felt good to write after a long time and yes, partly ‘coz of seeing of all u guys blogs!
i agree with LL
The tone does seem to have changed somehow.
either... or...
I dont notice any changes ; either I’ve read too few and far apart, two consecutive Anantha’s blogs or I’ve grown too old to remember after he wrote the last one…
In any case, we are all in agreement that he should write more.
[Atleast he now has the ‘excuse’ to excuse himself from work early, citing personal commitments. Unfortunately for us, he seems to be using the same excuse with everyone except with his best half, I hope
]
oh man!
never knew ppl notice styles….may be i have grown too old to notice the changes!
