It was this lighter that I had purchased in a tiny village in the middle of a jungle, next to a beautiful river with class 1-3 rapids.
I’d purchased it because it had a tiny LED light in it - it was a torch as well. And the place where I was staying had power outages all the time, and I had forgotten to pack my flashlight.
So, as was predictable, the lights went out in the evening when i was having an animated conversation with some friends in the room upstairs.
Aw…let me find the candle.
Its in the corner there.
Some light was available through the window, and someone shuffled over to the corner - I got up and took my lighter out of my pocket.
Oh, I got a light here.
I flashed the lighter’s LED on.
Alright, I’ll be right back.
I navigated my way to the toilet downstairs. On the way, I noticed the circular orb cast by the LED not being very clear - something was blurring the circle of light. So I look close, and I discover to my amazement that it was the picture of a girl, being projected into the center of the light. The LED in the lighter was being used as a projector and one could see the slightly blurry image of a curvaceous naked girl.
Amused, I switched it off and hurried back to my friends upstairs.
Guys!
Where’s your flashlight?
Guys, thats not a flashlight - its a lighter with an LED light built into it. I purchased it today morning, outside in that shack outside the gate. And you know what I just found?
and with a flick of my finger, I dramatically switched on the LED, and projected the image on the white wall - it focused much better because of the closer distance. She looked good, but still, slightly blurry. But the pose was still as seductive.
Oh…lovely!
You bought that thing HERE?
Hey, I didn’t know till now that the LED had the picture on it. I only got it for the light.
Yeess…I love Indian girls!
Oh yes, they are great.
But hang on a minute - why do you think she is an Indian girl?
That’s right, she need not be an Indian girl.
Chinese! she is chinese. They make the lighters in China.
Oh c’mon - you think the chinese don’t have an all kinds of images of naked girls from all over the world? I mean, its as easy to find a picture of a white girl or a black girl or arab girl or whatever. Doesn’t matter if you are in china. And it could very well have been made in Russia, you know.
yeah. I mean, she could easily be anyone. Not African, of course. But regardless of what country or race she is from, she is hot - anyone would say that.
You are saying she is chinese only because the lighter could be from china. I mean, you can’t see her features that well. Look - its too blurry to see her face clearly.
So what are you saying - she has a chinese figure? C’mon, what is so chinese about her figure.
Well, you know, its got that…its chinese!
Nah, I disagree - she could be a native european as easily.
Yes, she could be from finland too - we have some - well, they could be mistaken to be chinese.
I mean - I buy this lighter here, in this vague village and its a lighter that projects the picture of a naked girl who could be finnish? Or chinese?
Its a global world today, you know.
Hell, you have been staying here for 15 years - did you know you could get projectable porn of foreign girls in this village?
Oh, noo. Interesting. But I think she is chinese.
Come onnnnn! what excatly is so chinese about her?
Well, every race has their physical characteristic proportion. Ok, I agree - she could be anyone, but most likely she is chinese.
Have you actually ever seen naked chinese girls?
He is not telling, hahaha.
Don’t be mean - he may have just seen it, you know, on the net or something.
So you are saying he surfs porn?
Noooo. I meant, one can’t help seeing such things on the net.
You are compelled?? To surf porn??
Stop being mean! its accidental - the spam and all that!
Either way - one gets to see pictures of naked humans from across the world at the click of a mouse - thank god for that.
And thus, we can tell the race and nationality of a girl just from her figure! Progress!
Not in India - you cannot - maybe a bit by the color of the skin, but Indians have all kinds of figures. She could be someone from Sikkim or Chennai or Bengal or Punjab. And they’ll all have different figures.
But you know, a lot of these figures that you may have seen - they are influenced by a global thing. The dominant paradigm, as they call it.
Yes - she has to be thin, long legs, etc.
I agree, they just don’t broadcast the figures that don’t match that paradigm. They wont employ models unless they are below a certain weight and above a certain height.
They actually do - down south. They make films with the heroines who are, like, full, etc. They like, as people say - some meat on the bone!
That’s enlightened!
I don’t know if that’s enlightened or if its just how they like it - no man is a hypocrite in his pleasures. So they show what they like to see.
So, you are saying that all portrayals of desirable things in media are close to what people actually like? I think not!
Very often its the media that shapes your pleasures.
Those are not REAL pleasures - these things just hide who you really are, what you like, what you.
Maya. Its all maya. Everything is an illusion.
I read a good thing the other day - “If surface is an illusion, then so is depth.”
Nice!
She has flatter breasts - she has to be chinese - they have, you know, tauter breasts and smaller ones. Thats why they look younger. See, everyone thinks big breasts are good. But smaller breasts are bigger because they don’t sag and bigger breasts always sag with age. That’s why a girl with smaller breasts can look younger for a longer time. So, guys who like women with big breasts are being really short-sighted.
I don’t have any hangups about breast sizes. Its about the proportion - the relation of one thing with another. You can’t consider body parts in isolation - we are not butchers. And besides, its how you use it, not what you have, you know.
deep.
You are high.
But I have to tell you, I love Indian girls, I think they are fantastic.
See, but I don’t get it why you consider media to be something separate from other conditionings. Its just like anything else, isn’t it?
Yeah, the media is always saying that they only show what is there, or what people like.
Not true - some things become popular because people think they are popular. I mean, who the hell did anyone care in India about princess diana’s life. But they kept flashing her because the foreign media kept flashing her at the people, and so the Indian media flashed her at the poor villagers here. And thus we all know about who the princess of di was with - no matter whether we were interested in her or not.
They created an awareness about her, yeah - they called her a media celebrity.
Hey c’mon, she did so much good work!
What good work - I bet you can’t tell me even 3 good things she has done.
I dont have to know - if she hadn’t done, why would they say she had??
So you will swallow anything the media says?
It can’t be all lies.
Hey hey hey - you cannot ever underestimate the human talent of lying. Especially lying to oneself. I mean, we are all delusional in so many ways. Or, maybe under illusions.
How do you know its an illusion?
You cross-question, yaar.
You can’t really cross-question everything - who has the energy?
And besides, even in asking a question, you may not know what to ask. See, you have to know a lot to ask the right questions. Or you will only ask questions in accordance with the illusions that you have.
We are all fucking trapped in ignorance. We don’t know what shit we are in, we don’t know what to even get out of.
What, its a bad thing if you don’t know if you are unhappy? What kind of a weird thing is that? We think we are unhappy but we don’t know that?
Welllll…
Aren’t we all unhappy, deep down?
Not me.
Ok, I am french, maybe thats why I am saying that.
The french are unhappy? Why? I thought they were getting laid all the time and they had all the chic things. I mean, aren’t they liberated?
Its different. From inside they are unhappy. Yeah, we had a conversation about it the other day.
Maybe only the people you know are unhappy.
Hahaha. Well, of course, I am sure a lot of them are very happy, but generally speaking, they are unhappy.
That may be true - you know, when I see all those foreign language films, the european ones. In them, even if they are showing friends who meet each other after a long time - they just nod at each other and smile. If they were Indians, they’d be jumping up and down and hugging each other. At least, they’d sound really happy. Most of the foreign language films are depressing in how they show relationships, I tell you. Where is the joy of life in them??
My friend, you have just displayed that your perception of a culture is shaped by media - not by direct experience of reality.
Media is a kind of reality. Isn’t illusion part of reality?
Yeah, yeah. If it weren’t like that, why would they show that, etc. Right?
right!
yeah, so Indians dance around trees and sing songs with their girlfriends, right?
Its the James-bond-bandit-queen phenomenon.
James bond?
bandit queen?
Yeah. See, Indians - their primary impressions of western things were shaped by media. So Indians saw all those james bond movies and what they got from that was that you had to wink at a western woman and she’s be ready to have a one night stand with them. And the foreigners, they saw movies like bandit queen and they thought that Indians treated their women really bad. Its the movies that make us think in the way that we think.
We do. I mean, we Indians do treat our women badly.
Thats bullshit. Women get beaten up as much by percentage in western countries as they get beaten up in India.
Human trafficking, man - it happens in India more than in a western country.
You have any idea of how many kids are reported missing in the US? You know how many women are exploited there?
Guys. Even guys. It affects little kids, too. Gender does not matter so much
Goa is a centre - pedophiles from western countries. They buy those bungalows with tall walls and no-one can see inside. And they get those kids from all over the place. The kind of things people indulge in, its horrifying.
That famous american sci-fi author, staying in Sri lanka - wasn’t he a paedo? He could get all the kids he wanted in a poor third world country like Sri lanka. Everyone knew about it and nobody caught the fellow. I wouldn’t be surprised if they even felt honored that they had this legend coming to their country - whatever the reason.
No, no - what are you saying - only westerners have paedophiles?
Not at all - I am very sure there are as many pedos in India, or for that matter in any nation, as there are in any other country. It just doesn’t get reported uniformly.
Yes, to the contrary, my friend. I think its only a matter of who is in a position to exploit. See, the rich man has always exploited the poor man. It does not matter who is the rich man - Indian or american or african. Man exploits man. Rich cultures exploit poor cultures. Look at this girl in that picture in your lighter. She bares herself because someone pays her and probably she needs the money. So the man with money will pay her and get what he wants from her. It doesn’t matter what she likes.
Not all of them are needy, trust me. You know how much a porn star makes? Probably much more than all of us here combined. I mean, I don’t know, but I think! And they do it without being forced. Pursuit of pleasure, and all that.
How many? And, that’s a ridiculous thing to say, that these women are enjoying it. Most of them are being exploited. How can you question this??
I agree. Unconditionally. Women are being exploited.
Guys, X is playing the guitar downstairs - I think he is trying to woo M. In this candlelight and all! Come down and grab a place before the house is full.
Yeah. Really? be right there.
And, not men? Do you know that more men commit suicides than women? That they face greater stress and have more heart attacks?
Great. Now we are competing in who is more miserable.
We are all miserable. We are human beings, after all. To be human is to know misery. See, animals are not miserable - they just are whatever they are. They may be in pain - but they are not miserable. But misery - misery is the unique inheritance of humans.
“The birds - they have their nests, and the foxes - they have their holes. But the son of man has no place to rest his head.”
Awesome.
Its in the bible.
The lights are back!
Yes we can see that, but thank you for the information.
Haha. fuck you too!.
Hey, can I buy that lighter from you?
You want to buy it? Why don’t you get another one from the same shack? Its right outside the gate on that road.
Yeah. I think I will do that tomorrow. I really love Indian girls.

let there be light...
Atra,
Good read as usual… a very nice ramble more like a ‘Genesis to Revelation in 5 minutes’
CN
Glad you liked it, CN

Good to see you back in action. This one too had the typical Atrakasya ingredients ( a bit of sleaze, a dollop of philosophy, etc etc) in it which makes it eminently palatable.
I had no frikkin clue that such lighters had been invented.. leave alone being sold in middle of jungle. If you ever decide to auction off the said lighter, I would be first one in the queue with my bid of Rs. 5

IW,
glad you foundnd it palatable. But I think the chinese are responsible for the sleaze, not me.
I have a theory that the lighters were invented for the poor folks who could not afford to buy a playboy or access a net. I can only imagine a village full of chaps who reach into their pockets when the lights go off, and hey presto, the whole village is lit up again with bright orbs of light with pretty girls in them.
The lighter is unfortunately not in a working condition (the flame part is gone, but not to worry, the interesting part still works). So, if I ever see you, I shall give it to you ex gratia. Suna hai, pyase ko paani pilao to punya milta hai.

Aaaatraaaa
Started reading - it sounded like so like teenager talks so excited to have found some woman in a lighter!
then as we got towards the media part - teenager talks gave way to philosophical oldie talks

wow, i didn’t know that the lighter thingy was big enough to be banned. I am definitely not throwing away mine, in that case!
About the post - its a new format that I am experimenting with. The conversations are obviously not verbatim - they are part reality, part extensions of what was said/indicated, part of what someone else had said on the subject at some other time, and partly the interplay of different archetypes and their opinions. I’ve just stitched it together around the basic conversation that happened, which was factual.
The format is inspired by the contention that no memory is accurate, and that memory, fantasy, imagination, thoughts become indistinguishable at a point, and everything is unreal or that everything is real. That is why I have not differentiated between who said it, the thoughts and the descriptions. Its all the same -either memories or words spoken by archetypes in my head.
I’d like to call it a fantasy of real memories.
Atra
This is almost like you sat with a recording of the conversation and transcribed it. If not you either have an incredible memory or the ability to portray different voices accurately. I loved the broad spectrum of topics an innocent image generated and better still how it returned to whats important - the task of procuring another lighter.
The lighters are a hit in small towns where kids have no access to the net. Wasnt the sale of these recently banned in Kerala ?
TOTCS.
