The Namesake - Part I

TOTCS (the one they call Stuckinkindergarten) has always been fascinated by the concept of bloggers meeting up in real life. DSS provided ample examples with people getting together across the globe, often meeting up more regularly in real life than online. From his fortress of solitude TOTCS watched as friendships formed, love blossomed, people got married, some feelings were hurt. In Dec 2006 TOTCS took the important first step from the virtual to real world after discovering that he had more in common with a fellow DSSer than just taste in music. What follows is a long-overdue, first-person account of various meets. A slice of life blog by a not so sharp knife.

Blogging for me has always been a chance to improvise, to exercise the right side of the brain. Being a very private person with a solitary nomadic existence, it becomes necessary for me to create a secret identity. Like superman I hope to be mild mannered geek by day and by night TOTCS (still a mild mannered geek - damn TV ruined my imagination). In fact I’m so secretive about my true identity that I blog wearing fake glasses with the attached plastic nose and moustache.

Over time the world gets divided into 2 distinct spheres. Friends and family are unaware of the blog and while interacting with DSSers via emails I instinctively sign off as TOTCS although several of them are nice enough to write under their real names. The thought of crossing over comes up everytime someone writes about a blogger meet. I’m curious to see how each blogger matches up to the mental image I have formed from their writings but several hurdles stand in the way. First - none of the DSSers are in Mumbai. Second- I’m not the most scintillating of conversationalists and past experiences of meeting people I’ve only known online have included entire evenings filled with awkward pauses between polite requests to pass the salt, right through dessert.

In Dec 2006 several events conspire to make conditions for a crossover favorable. Four of my favorite musicians are touring India and Bangalore is one of their stops. My cousin promises me front row seats if I come down. This is enough impetus to get off my butt and make arrangements for a trip. Round this time I discover that Capt Nemo and I share the same first name. So I figure if all else fails we could atleast talk about the pros and cons of our first name, since everyone else who I know with the same first name are either dead or wishing they were. So we exchange phone numbers. We plan to meet up at the concert and over the weekend he promises to fix-up a Bangalore DSS meet.

Dec 6 2006
I land in Bangalore. Since there are only 3 hrs to the concert my cousin recommends we hang around near the venue (St John’s Auditorium, Koramangala) rather than make a pit stop at his house, which is 2 kms away. This gives me a feel for traffic conditions. I call Capt Nemo hoping to catch up before the concert starts but he is 2 kms away. I ask him to call me when he reaches the venue. I have no idea what he looks like but from his writings I picture him as a leather jacket wearing biker (an Indian version of Brando in Wild one). Minutes before the show starts he comes in and I’m surprised at how accurate my mental image is (apart from the leather jacket biker bit I’m dead on). We exchange pleasantries and talk about DSS. Pradzie is winding up things in Bangalore and cant make it to the show so I miss the chance to meet him. Its time for the concert to begin so we head off to our seats. During the intermission we meet up to compare notes. After the show we meet up in the parking lot but I have to leave in a hurry so we say our goodbyes. Unfortunately I have to cut my Bangalore trip short so I miss the opportunity to meet the rest of the DSSers. I give him a CD with about 100 tunes of various artists (I find it easier to calculate a percentile score that way) to get a feel for his taste in music. I also promise to blog about the meet as soon as I get back home.

Aug 3 2007
Mumbai is under water. I skip work and wade through knee-deep water to the nearest multiplex to catch the opening show of “Simpsons The Movie”. The kid at the ticket counter tells me there will be no show. Not amused I snake my hands through the little opening in the glass and grab him by the neck with a “Why you little…“. The manager tries to calm me down by explaining that the prints haven’t arrived on account of the rain. He invites me to watch the latest Bollywood potboiler instead. I invite him to eat my shorts and now he grabs me by my neck. Just then the phone rings, interrupting our stand off. It’s Capt Nemo. He’s just flown in town and though he’s made it to his office uneventfully, none of the candidates he has come down to interview have shown up. Since the day has been a washout we decide to meet up the next day, weather and time permitting.

The next day Capt Nemo calls me. He is on his way to the airport and has a few hours before the flight. We decide to meet at the Orchid (a venue recommended to him by mighty Atracus). Over lunch we get a chance to discuss music. He scores a high percentile on my test CD so we have lots of common ground. Over the next few hours we trace our evolution as listeners back to the time before the internet and CDs and MP3s. Our paths are more or less identical with lots of credit going to AM & SW radio and those unsung heroes the purveyors of pirated PMT tapes. Capt Nemo is a lot more open minded and scholarly when it come to music and as a result his taste spans genres from world music to sufi music and ghazals in addition to rock, jazz and blues. I on the other hand have favored bands featuring a good guitarist.

Capt Nemo is a maverick and has led an extremely interesting life so we end up talking about economics, theatre, debating, movies - just some of the fields he has seriously dabbled in. Soon its time for his flight so I walk him to the airport terminal. Once again I promise to blog about the meet as soon as I get home.

so, we shall meet...

imp,
we shall meet soon, I will come over to your campus over the weekend [if you are not travelling back to your native every weekend] Also, I seem to have misplaced your number which I had got [a long time ago, on Anantha’s wedding day]

Atra,
The concert I went to after meeting you was a small private hindustani music concert… The concert I met TOTCS for the first time was the Bunny Brunel & Frank Gambale concert.

TOTCS,
I just noticed a very trivial error in the venue of Bunny Brunel concert, it is St. John’s Auditorium and not St. Andrews as mentioned…

totcs

Hey, I have had the good fortune of having met the good captain in person, too, and managed to get recommendations for some superb books in economics, which I duly purchased and read with great interest.
Sadly, I am a total duffer in music, so I could not discuss much of music with him. One day, I hope to learn how to design music, and then maybe I could jam with him on that.

Come to think of it, if my memory serves me correctly, CN was going to attend some concert after I left for the airport. Was that the concert you met totcs at, CN?

whoa TOTCS!!!

Jawdropping! I never imagined I’d be pictured as a Black Rebel, it definitely feels good though…

TOTCS,
Thanks man, I shall now use this blog to market myself to all the pretty girls [but I shall not show it to my aunt, she will spoil it for me by using it in her own incompetent way to get me settled] Big Grin
When are you here?

Anantha,
your ex-roommate had come late last night, we’ve been swapping some music, movies and books. When I told him about your sudden rare appearance on DSS, he remarked ‘maybe his wife’s back in India, so he must be having lots of free time and being lonely’… If that is the case, please blog…

LL,
We can meet anytime you are here in Bangalore or when I am on Mars… And of course, send me your wishlist for the CDs and you shall get it…

IW,
Man, my call to you was a desperate plea for help and you accuse me of coersion? yeh kya naa insaafi hain? In any case, it is good to see some action here again isn’t it? after all the efforts you and asuph put into keeping it going with occasional visits to the shoutbox when everyone else had abandoned ship…

bottled imp,
Yeah, there is still life here… You still in Bangalore? We should meet up sometime along with all the others. A Bangalore meet is long pending…

we should meet

am very much around. why not meet on campus. there is a nice coffee day as well surrounded by resort-like greenery. whaddya say?

I second that...

…but I think we’re lacking a chief guest!
TOTCS, won’t you do us the honour of visiting Blr again? Big Grin

wait...

for two months…I shud be back in Blore…then we can meet …
Capn : No comments Big Grin

well...

seems like there is some life on dss. will be back to read the posts and comment…

Thanks

La Louve,
Dont believe everything you read in my blogs. I’m not the lean mean fighting machine I like to make myself out to be. In fact I’m somewhere between pacifist and coward Smiling.

IW,
You commented just in time. It saves me the trouble of sawing a horse in half and a bundle on Fed-Ex middle of the night delivery Smiling. As for DSS I can hardly complain when I’ve done so little to keep it alive. On the positive side - every member here seems to be actively blogging and if they would just post a link here from time to time, this place would be back to its former self. I still prefer posting here though.

Keep commenting and posting.

TOTCS.

TOTCS Bhai,

I am posting my comment under duress. Would you believe if I tell you I received 2 threatning calls (actually one call and one SMS) saying “TOTCS Bhai has posted a blog. You bloddy well read it first and then comment” !!

I am not kidding a bit.. and I am not drunk aswell (incidently getting drunk, as in, “fulltu talli” has been my lifetime ambition. But i have always stopped at the 2nd or 3rd peg while still being in control of my senses. For once in my life, i want to get beyond this self-imposed limits to see what its really like to be on an alcohol induced “high”.. )

Few hours back your Namesake called me and told me that you have blogged on DSS and asked me to read in case I haven’t. And before CN , I got a text message from another DSSr whose name i shall withheld for guarding her identity . She too mentioned that TOTCS has blogged and I better read and comment so as to put some life back into this dead space. I guess she is asking me to do the impossible ! This place is deader than DEAD..

But I will do what is possible within my means.. which is commenting. Infact I had read your blog last nite Smiling Way before I got those threats.. and had made a mental note to comment over the weekend. I throughly enjoyed the “minutes” of your meeting(s) with CN.. I think I smiled after ages while reading something. Otherwise life has been quite a bitch (workwise) lately. Hoping to read a lot more from you in near future..

TOTCS & CN

You blogged!! that’s so cool!

and You’ve blogged a perso-different blog!!

and YOU HAVE MET A BLOGGER FRIEND!!!

TOTCS, it’s really nice that you could meet up with someone from the online world and better till gel well with that person. And TOTCS for the solitary figure taht you pretend to be, you fight with people?!

*am i the only one here who hasn’t ever met another blog buddie?? Broken Heart *

CaptainNemo when do we meet up? - everyone here seems to have met you? Don’t forget to prepare CD for me then, like TOTCS did for you okay?

waiting for next blog!

agree!

Capt Nemo is a maverick and has led an extremely interesting life so we end up talking about economics, theatre, debating, movies
ofcourse i know u wud agree with me when i correct the tense in the sentence to present Smiling
dont know why he does not act but i wud love to watch a play featuring him

I agree

Anantha,
From my talks with him, he seems to prefer the behind the scenes activities like set design, lighting and special effects. Theatre attracts it fair share of pretentious prima donnas and I think he has limited patience for them. It reminds me of a dialogue from “The producers” -
Leo Bloom: Actors are not animals! They’re human beings!
Max Bialystock: They are? Have you ever eaten with one?
If you are still in Bangalore we must meet up the next time I come down. Together we could try to convince him.

TOTCS.

LL & Cap'N

Here you go folks. This first person stuff is really difficult so I’ve posted whatever I have. If only I could let my mind wander for inspiration at night …
