Sivaji- Catch Me If you can Afford!
For all Rajni Fans in the US, the wait is finally over. It will truly be a worldwide release! Sivaji in India, June 15th. Sivaji in US of A, June 15th! Whoohoo! As a die-hard Rajni fan, I rushed to all the websites offering tickets for “Thalaivar†movie. The ticket prices made me jump out of my seat with joy. I was hoping the organizers would be stupid enough to raise the regular ticket price of $8 by only 3 or 4 dollars. No! They have restored my faith by doubling it to $16! Whoohoo! Not only that, they have had the better sense to triple it on opening day. That Serves those movie-crazy-Tamilians right. Especially the Rajni Fans who would jump off a cliff for “Thalaivar†if they have to.

For the record, I am the furthest thing from a Rajni fan, imaginable - I certainly won’t be watching Thalamatchacallit or Sivaji.

One strong reason why you should care is because if this guy is so thoroughly popular, and you haven’t heard of him, then perhaps, to connect with the rest of the society, in seeing who is this guy who is such a phenomenon and for what?
Popular culture is a direct imprint of the social psyche, its aspirations and sensibilities. When someone (like bacchan or rajnikant) become the objects of adulation of so many, it means that their personas are in sync with the largest segments of social psyche - they represent the maximum.
In ethnographic studies, you have something called user profiling, where you construct a stereotype that represents a certain segment of the target audience, and its quite a skill to be even be able to construct such a representative stereotype accurately, even on paper. Consider the difficulty of being an actual human who, through every aspect of his life (which is so open to scrutiny) is able to be such a stereotype that such a large segment of people voluntarily identify with.
Its no mean ability to reach there - anyone who has done this really deserves respect. And this guy - he began as a bus conductor. He is not stereotypically good looking - probably 99% of the extras in popular Indian cinema look much better than him.
The question is - what is it about this guy? How did he manage this?

I think the reason for Rajni Phenom is clear identification of good & bad in his movies, heroism in a manner where u wish you had someone like that who would take care of your problems (MGR had it,Chiru has it,Amitabh had it not anymore) and above all, the joy to let go in the mob-behaviour of crazy Rajni fans! The camaraderie of watching “Thalaivar” movie in theatre has become a part of tamil culture!

I’ve been seeing tonnes of spam on desi mailing lists, websites, orkut and what-not - and I’ve NEVER heard of all these people.
So anwer this, while I peep out from under this rock - “Who? And why should I care?” (not being snobbish, or disdainful - just curious!)
