Shel Silverstein’s book “where the sidewalk ends” is a kids’ classic. Almost every house I walk into seems to have a copy lying around in the kids’ bookshelves.
Actually, the concept of simplicity being the highest form of sophistication or complexity or refinement is not that esoteric.
Systems theory has come to it, so have many branches of design and any science concerned with highly complex calculations with too many parameters playing a role to be able to predict precise effects.
Now, to know the principle of ‘simplicity being sophistication’ is one thing - to realize it fully is another. Most designers/creators do know the principle quite well, though they may not be able to fuly apply it in their creation. Sometimes they are - when working on something very intensely comes up with a minimal solution in a specific work.
Like Antoine de Saint-Exupery said - “You know you’ve achieved perfection in design, not when you have nothing more to add, but when you have nothing more to take away”.
Sometimes a piece of art arrives at simplicity through an iterative process, not through direct insight.
The direct insight to a simple solution is probably what belongs to Buddha’s domain.
The iterative process, without doubt, belongs to de bono’s domain.
But Chetiyaare, now this ground breaking, earth shattering, brain sputtering truth is NOT a simple thought, is it now? And i mean it is simply NOT. Who would’ve thought of this other than you?
So with the magical powers vested in my backpocket by holy trinity sisters, the State of DSS and myself, i hereby condemn to you to a lower strata of unsophistication.
You wrote, no quoted, no coined the phrase “Simple is sophistication”.
Well, according to me those are not mere words, but something profound. To be at that level of understanding of the human condition is to be at par with Buddha and Bono. [ok the Bono part maybe a little exaggerated]. But its not simple thoughts….these don’t come to us everyday, everywhere from just abt anyone. Only select few for these are more than a thoughts in passsing….therefore judging by your own line, you’re not a simple, ornary man!
