So, I woke up saturday , very late and felt a tingling in my left hand. “Darn, I
slept on it again”, was my first thought. I thought it’ll wear off. It did not . So much so that, when , in the evening, a friend asked me out to join him and some friends, I told him , I felt like an ogre and wanted to stay in my cave or wherever ogres do stay. (just remembered, shrek stays in a swamp. ) I finally did join him cus I wanted to distract myself.
Come sunday and the tingling is still there. And being a paranoid little hypochondriac that I am , my thoughts this time were about heart attacks. I can squarely blame a sulekha blog for this one. My mom’s bursitis was the second option. I mean, I inherited her migraine, maybe this was part of the package too. Meanwhile, I haven’t called a doc, cus the medical center I go to is conveniently closed during wkends. Yay.
A friend had come over to spend the day and through out the meals ( bfast, lunch, dinner and dessert), and the movies,Krish, krish and shrek !!! , I occasionaly thought of my hand. Yeah right.Anyhoo, come monday morning and this morning cant be anymore worse, cus my hand is….u guessed it right. Still TINGLING. Talked to an MD friend of mine and man I wish he was here cus he gave me more than the customary 5 seconds after a two month wait for the appointment. His diagnosis- parasthesia. He told me to get my hand checked cus neglect might be bad. My hand or my arm even might get paralysed.
This time, I asked to see a GP instead of the recommended neurologist. ( I did
not want to wait for a month). Saw my nice doc who first showed me an atlas of the spinal cord and then proceeded to prod and poke and hit me with her various tools of torture. Her diagnosis - Carpal Tunnel. Yours truely is now wearing a wrist support and is on meds for two wks.
Now, this is the info I’d like to share. First, if any weird sensation persists.
Do not neglect it. It might be weird but it also might be an important way of your body telling you something needs help and fast. Second, the test that was the final way of telling if the inflammation was really there- relax your hand and keep it palm side up. Immediately below the palm where one generally feels the pulse, tap gently with the index finger of the other hand. If it hurts, the median nerve is definitely getting affected because of the inflammation.

What I found funny in the whole episode is that , I am right handed and its my
left hand thats affected. Go figure.

Will hand massages help?…get as many as you need.
Chay
thanks for the hand rub dudette. The doc suggested I ice the wrist for a little while every day, so , am doing that. Am also taking all my meds and wearing the wrist support when I do not have to actually do something with the hand.
I guess thats the most I can do. Hopefully its all gonna go away in a wk or two.
You take care.
awww bilbs...

You kids back at it again, huh huh? Now go back to your classes!!!
Bilbs, i don’t really know how a japanes swamp looks like. There must be bonzai trees, garden, a pretty bridge and samurai jack to give you company, no? Anyways rest that hand and don’t into fights now, remember, you’ll need two hands to strangle.
Till then i’ll try not to sleep on my left hand…
ok babe
Best of luck with your “carpal tunnel syndrome” that so very strangely affects the hand you don’t use.
And, if you wish to imagine (for your usual unsubstantiated reasons) that I am giving you info merely dumb-gleaned from google (kinda like the links you pasted), feel free
dude
and I may be completely wrong here too, but google ain’t god and saying something again and again and loudly enough and using big words won’t make it right if it is way off base to begin with.
nasal neuro epithelium indeed!!!
I am not gonna comment on this further cus I do need to rest my wrist and this is so not worth it. You have a good day
P.S not all labwork involves inhalation of fumes, least of all mine.
May I remind you what ass u me translates to. Feel free to do what you wish with yourself but, pray, leave me out of it
also
Billo,
I might be completely wrong, but no harm in also looking into the possibility that inhalation of any vapors or fumes during any labwork might be involved. This pathway of the body being affected through the nasal neuroepithelium is often highly neglected. (Surprisingly so, because its the most open, and most vulnerable portal to the nervous system. Anytime anything concerned with the CNS is suspected, this is the first possibility that must be checked out).
Also do try eliminating/changing your room freshener or shampoo or anything that may have one of those synthetic parfum that might be kinda slow-toxifying the nervous system.
Docs are not going to be able to find a cause like that - that part you will have to hunt out yourself.
