It’s been a week since RDB was released ; the vote has been cast by the movie going public & I am afraid the verdict is splintered in 4 groups.
“the movie left me with a feeling of DREAD”
– Kauphy ( Ex. Pune Times Columnist.. Content Writer.. Medha Patkar in the making)
“A movie with a HEART”
– Vivek Sharma ( Poet.. Philosopher.. Physicist )
“It left me COLD”
- Scarlett ( Dreamer.. ChildWoman.. Ghaati )
“I want my money back”
- India Whining ( Single Available Bachelor )
Okay I was just kidding about ticket refund bit. To be quite honest, RDB did manage to create a favorable impression on me. I consciously didn’t read any reviews before I watched the movie. I had no clue what the storyline was, just knew that it was a new Aamir Khan movie. I feel, the way you react to a movie depends a lot on the kind of mindset with which you step inside the theatre.I saw the movie on the eve of 4 days long Chinese New Year holiday weekend so I was in upbeat festive mood & was determined not to let anything dampen my holiday spirits. On any other day (and in any other mood), perhaps, the critic inside me would have found 101 Banal Things (BTs) to say about RDB, but today I could list down just 5 BTs.
The point which this movie tries to make has been beaten to pulp in many movies before. The novelty of RDB lies in its script (& the cinematography) which seamlessly blends the sepia toned history with the garish happenings of today. The college canteen genre of humour, is what, endears this film to the masses. I may be wrong in saying this, but I feel, the humour of this movie would go down well with audiences from North & West India rather than someone from South or East India. The reason I say this is because, most of the punch lines (mouthed by AK) are delivered with a heavy dose of rustic Punjaabi flavour. I think my brothers from the non Hindi speaking states may find it wee bit alien & tad too heavy to comprehend.
Turning back to the 5 BTs which bugged me about RDB :
1> Indophile Firangee Protagonist :
10 minutes in the movie, I realized that, if i were to enjoy this movie I have to somehow erase out the nausea inducing sweet firang lady from the screen. It doesn’t help that she makes entry in Frame-1 itself & one has to endure her right till the last frame. Imagine a wide-eyed..rose cheeked..dumb..indophile Barbie.. & you would get the drift of what I am talking about.
2> Om Puri & Waheeda Rehman :
Om Puri is wasted in his minuscule role. Its sacrilege to cast someone of his stature & then relegate him to obscurity.
Waheeda Rehman hams away to glory. It doesn’t help that she gets to mouth probably the most clichéd lines. She deserves to be smacked on head for her theatrics & thankfully she does get coma inducing blow to her head during a laathi-charge scene. The director/writer pathetically tries to equate a coma stricken WR to problem stricken Bhaarat Maata. When the ill-fated mini-revolution staged by AK & gang succeeds, Bhaarat Maata slips out of coma with tears trickling down her cheek..Awww So heart rending.. So poignant.. So damn cheesy [Puke].
3> Lata Mangeshkar & Music :
Sadly some things don’t get better with time .That holds true for Lata ji’s voice . Her once strong melodious voice sounds weak & vulnerable. In a duet with Rehman, its Rehman’s voice which sounds more pleasing than hers, that does says a lot doesn’t it ?? Anyways, I am too small a person to critique a living legend like LM.. Her failing voice notwithstanding, no one can deny her rightful place amongst the immortals. I still have utmost respect for her god given talent . Barring the title track, the other songs fail to leave any lingering impression.
4> Meandering First Half :
The film takes its humorous vein too seriously in the first half. At times, I felt, okay enuff of this buffoonery.. “Can we move on with the story ?? At this rate I am gonna miss my last train”. I watched the 10pm Show, Some crisp editing would have saved me the “One Half” midnight surcharge that I shelled out for Cab.
5> Movie Ending :
The movie ends on a very pessimistic & simplistic note. One would have expected the likes of Kamlesh Pandey/Prasoon Joshi/Aamir Khan to think of more meaningful ending. The way it is, the cure seems worst than the disease itself.
Okay I don’t want to make it sound as if I didn’t enjoy the movie. I hardly laugh during the most comic scenes in movies. Most of the times when the whole theatre is guffawing, I am sitting there ( wooden faced ) in darkness, wondering if there is something wrong with me ?? or there is something wrong with the the juntaa in general. But while watching RDB, I did laugh heartily many times &, most of times my laughter was in-sync with the rest of the crowd. For this alone, I am ready to give passing marks to RDB.
Go watch the movie, if you want to find out which of the four categories of DSSrs you belong to.
Comments
Scary.. Ano
Scary,

Aatah gurl cool down,(here) take this Raavalgaon toffee first. I am shamelessly plugging for U in my last 2 blogs..But instead of thanking me, U accuse me of character assasination ?? I am deeply hurt.
Ano,
Thanx buddy for Ur soothing praise, btw, the dictionary says irrcorrigible as someone who is “hopeless” / “incurable” / “irredeemable”.. Am I all that ??
oops!
i meant the way your blogs and comments make me smile/laugh!
not you the person
incorrigble!
u are getting incorrigible by the day!
enjoyed your review a great deal.
btw, what about 5th category of DSSers who will never watch the movie even when it airs on Star/Sony/Zee??
IW you better explain
what you mean by “childwoman”!!!!!!! I opened up your blog post and I see this!!!This after you saying I was your dear ghaati sister!!!!IW, you better explain this strange thing I am supposed to be…NOW (now is that demanding making me sound like a child woman…see what you have done, made a paranoid person even more so).
And when did I say RDB left me cold, I said it did not do anything for me and that it was awful, loud and juvenile…and far removed from any trace of patriotic feeling.
Neways you explain yourself my dear ghati bro…
Scarlett
..has decided to deal with Asuph later!
Dubyaa who ??
pradz,
Btw, yeh Dubyaa kaun hein ?? U still nursing Amriki hangover ??
I am with U, Lagaan was a damn neat movie..besides, the Firang lady in Lagaan was swell
ssm,peps,ardraa..
Thanx for reading through..Somehow never got around to watch Ankush. Hopefully I can get hold of its VCD on one of these days..
hilarous out-take on RDB, whiner !
i loved your post. i was tempted to ignore this post until after i’ve seen the movie (maybe this weekend), but as usual, i was sucked in by reading some of the comments.
can’t possibly imagine a 40-yr-old aamir playing a college kid (the last time i saw that mismatch was ajay devgan in yuva), but i’ll zip it up until i see this movie. and, in the meantime, i’ll keep a firm lid on my expectations
yep -ankush
it was- and the girl was Nisha Singh- she used to be a model- and there is this great court scene- where Nana Patekar gives a wonderful performance..
Ardra
ROTFL
@medha patkar and other descriptions..
btw, dunno how right i might be [and i am not instuniating that RDB is a copy or anything] but wasnt there a movie with nana patekar..four worthless losers, and there is this single gal who moves into locality with her mom..and she changes them and makes them see how worthy they can be..she commits suicide coz of bad goons and these guys find their worth by well, murdering the goons, coz the system wont.
just curious.
ankush, peps ???
it’s been a few years since I saw a grainy VHS tape of that movie, but yeah, i remember the movie (and the girl was cute too
)
Thanx Bhaai Log
Cheti,
I can see why u strongly disagree with me on BT-1..Saaley,2 din US mein kyaa rahaa, tereko gori meme itni pasand aaney lagi ? Anyways, One partially agree.. One agree.. One Strongly agree isn’t that bad a score..
Asuph,
Arey Gabbar ke chelay..U want to take away my most valued possesions ?? Mere 2 (worthless) haath agar tu legaa toh mein kaise jeeyungaa yaar ?? Apnaa haath jagganaath Gabbar..U can have my (worthy) head instead.
Imp,
Watch it in a packed movie theatre,it will make it more interesting.. more enjoyable experience.Btw, i have posted this blog under “Vent-O-Matic” category.I don’t think I am qualified enough to review a movie.
Eye Dub
movie banaya aam public ke liye aur review likhtha hain hi fundu? mia, so far from what i hear the movie was alright although nowhere comparable to DCH and lagaan.
Asuph, i personally thought Lagaan rocked and i totally loved the movie.
“haath agar tu legaa toh mein kaise jeeyungaa yaar ?? Apnaa haath jagganaath Gabbar” damn eyeah dubya, is that why the Thakur in Sholay was sad? i totally laughed at your line!!!!
pradzs
personally i thought the movie could have been mercilessly edited. and in general i thought it was pretty juvenile, and dull and overhyped
.
the music rocked tho.
swades, on the other hand, although preachy, was much better made, much tighter, much less-overacted…
but then, that’s just me,

Are you talkin about Lagaan dude? I saw the movie in its 2nd week and it stretched to 2.5 hours and not a minute in the movie, i thought was out of place or unwanted. maybe except that one english song, but otherwise it was ‘tight’ yaar. kia tight movie thi. Hyped yes, but again hype is what brings in collections for the first week. i havent seen swades yet, will chk it out this wkend
so IW
it is a kind of thumbs up then eh? will certainly watch it one day. atleast on dvd. and i hope my wife will translate the punch lines but considering how often i say ‘you cant really translate that’ while we watch telugu movies, she may use the same lines on me. that apart, i liked the way you wrote the review.
lol !
“most of times my laughter was in-sync with the rest of the crowd” man you have made self-deprecating humour a fine art
And about the movie itself …
1) i dont agree !
2) agree partially … i think the roles of Anupam kher, Om Puri and Waheeda Rehman were more like guest appearances ! They all had one or two moments .. there was no intention or scope to develop those characters … BTW Waheeda <> Mother India thing didnt occur to me ! I think you are reading too much into the the directors symbolism !!!
3)LM’s voice after long suited as a mourning mothers voice ! Music : I am sure it will “grow” on you !
4)I agreee : it was going on and on ! if not for the comedy .. it would have been a torture !
5 ) TOTALLY agree !!! too jingoistic ! its like a Vijayakanth movie : only instead of Vijayakanth its a bunch of college students !
=)) @ iw
more than your review I liked the lines describing the dssers…
i was going to rotfl at “medha patkar in the making”, but then I live in Pune
but
@ ChildWomen…
man… i think u shd take over the Gazette. I cannot find more worthless hands.
RDB sigh. i want to hear about something else. It happened with Lagaan, it happened with many other movies. So much of hype makes me too cynical even before watching them. And that in addition to my inherent cynicism, is a deadly mix. I guess i’ll watch some gory Steven Segal film instead.
cheers,
asuph
