Jan25: Republic Day Tomorrow
Its Republic Day tomorrow. My Republic Day always starts with getting up early in the morning and going to my college (Fergusson College, Pune) to attend the flag-hoisting ceremony. Though its been three years since i passed, I still go every year on the 26th of January and 15th of August. There’s something so amazing about getting up early on these days and singing the national anthem. Also in our college, there are always parades from the NCC wing which are an absolute delight to watch.
My agenda after this is always rushing back home to watch the parade on DD. But on 15th of August, I linger on because the two most happening restaurants on F.C. Road- Savera and Vaishali offer very delectable and ‘made-especially-for-the-occasion’ Tiranga Masala Dosa and Uttappa.
Happy Republic Day everyone!
Where the mind is without fear
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake
— a poem from Rabindranath Tagore’s Geetanjali

oooh
and an FC student as well [WHOAAAA! hold on all ye frowners..i havent had a single chance to swap puneri-fergie-stories with ANYONE..ssm a puneri you say? not really..hez handicapped by shorter duration]
allright allrighty–will stop now..but FC-puneris are pretty hard to come by methinks..sniff.
but i'm no puneri
… just one of the wanna-be variety. my loss, needless to say. and yes, i’m handicapped by the duration thing.
but i’ve logged enough hours in that back-yard patio at Vaishali, and walked up & down FC Road innumerable times. sort of familiar stomping grounds - that area of town. Shreyas, British Council library, Symbiosis (we worked out of a Symbiosis building for a few weeks in the summer), and a wonderful hole-in-the-wall Gujju restaurant about half a mile up the road from FC.
aw MAN!
kauphy from amchi pune lookslike [yeah yeah…noticing all the ‘its not a blog about pune FYI’ looks]..man, and r.day memories ..i think R-day fell around the time
a) when you are supposed to start thinking about owning the books for onslaught of exams..and you make the proverbial trip to ABC to buy the books you never thought of buying in the beginning of college year
b)the weather is marvelous still
c) dad’s office has a mandatory flag ceremony at which dad delivers boring speech of his times, now times, youth of today and subtly hints at me and bro while we chomp on pedas
d) there is another ceremony in building but with better pedas
e) i went around distributing paper flags to all people and stuck them strategically at apartment entrance–just so it sticks into the neck of the people who walk in.
and good ole vaishali as always..sigh..cant believe i even left the palce or my childhood behind [blech..getting senti now? wot about those beyond-21 year old clubs you go to? could you do that while a child? no siree..there, feeling better now]
well...
…for years I marched in uniform, a few parades as a cadet and a few as the senior underofficer commanding… between those two fews there were a lot of times I got into trouble’s way trying to kick ass of insubordinate cadets, corrupt NCOs and JCOs. The song which always played in the background was the Kannada version of this Tagore song, which we used to sing in high school frequently along with some verses of Bhavad Gita during the prayer sessions.
This blog stirred some old memories and a rare bout of cynicism in me…
kauphy, enjoy the dosas and uttappas… The state of my country does nothing to make me proud for being a part of it.
CN
oh wow capn, dont be so cynical abt the country !! having a bad day?!
Which is that Kannada song btw?
i love this “Aakaashakkedduninta Parvata” of “Mysooru mallige” ( http://www.udbhava.com/udbhava/songs.jsp?fav_id=4156&user=10845 ).
more on the blog itself later
aa swatantra swargake...
“aa swatantra swargake namma naaDu yeLaleLaleLaleLali…”
Unfortunately I’m not finding the book which had the complete poem to post. I think it was translated by V Seetharamaiah [Vee Cee] or B M Shri. Will search for it.
Bad day? Ananth, I have begun to hate even looking at the newspapers since last week… Every politician we’ve elected has made us look like morons and I hate myself being taken for a ride everyday.
now now
CN … dont take all these transiet things to your heart …
Whatever it is I can not stop being proud of India ! I get my hair to stand on its end when singing the National Anthem .. and the joy of watching the REpublic day parade on a cold early morning in Delhi is awesome … and the magic of the Beating Retreat parade !! lovely stuff !
CN ! : NCC uh ?? cool !!! I used to be in NCC too ! Once upon a time !!!
nice poem, ain't it?
yeah love that Tagore poem.
watching parade?
it might be more fun to be matching in that parade!
yeah can’t say what it about these songs, but I like both the anthem and the vande mataram song.
