Munich!

“Every civilization finds it necessary to negotiate compromises with its own values!”—George Jonas/Tony Kushner/Eric Roth

The greatest aspect of Munich is not the visual treat that you see inside the dark theatre for over two hours; but the questions it raises, after you have experienced it!

Are you really civilized if “Revenge” is the path you take for the salvation of your country?

Does the phrase “One man’s Freedom fighter is another man’s terrorist!” hold true?

When survival is at stake, do the methods of how you get out of it matter?

You struggle with these questions and there is no one right answer!

middling marks from me, dRama

… i was almost about to post my take on Munich. but i realized a half-second before posting it that there were way too many spoilers in my blog. so i’ll just wait for a couple of weeks before posting my comments.

the keyhole-perspective: the movie asks interesting questions (the questions themselves are nothing new, but they are interesting nevertheless), but i wasn’t too impressed with the the nuts & bolts of the movie itself. details in a couple of weeks Smiling

Will be ready with the spanner...

Will be ready with the spanner to discuss the nuts and bolts SSM! What i loved most was from a cinematic perspective how you had lot of scenes that showed Spielberg’s skill in the craft.Since u have seen it i will talk abt them in cyptic words so it doesnt become a spoiler. The flight window scene, the bar scene, the radio scene, the family lunch scene with boss, the final airport scene..and when u have so many interesting and moving scenes in a movie it has gotto overlook the faults like too lengthy, too slow etc. I will wait for ur blog from u..though..

cool review, but...

neat review, rama…but I think I’l give this movie a pass…can’t stand that manipulative, heavy-handed bastard Big Grin…and your review suggests that steven “gotcha kids!” spielberg’s still up to his tricks…

Finally he does it!

Not that Steven didn’t have it..but after Lilo&Stitch edged Minority Report in opening week(in US) and not-matching-expectations with string of movies like “Catch Me If you can”,”Terminal” and “War of Worlds”, this movie finally matches it(according to me ofcourse) although as i said depending on how u feel on the issue, you will like it or feel manipulated.Syrianna also makes you feel the same way as if the entire Middle East crisis is bcoz of Oil Corporations and CIA.I felt extremely pissed at the content of it even though it had a very engaging, interesting screenplay.Either way, what both these movies do is make you ask some tough questions and have a discussion on the issues raised.

Interesting Perspective!

Dealing with Insecurity.
Tolerance.
Letting go of past.
Letting go of hatred.
Sacrifice of Self-interest for greater cause.

All of the above easier said than done may lead to breaking that cycle of violence, Maria! I never thought of that “dehumanizing” logic until you said it.Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
You’re right about the media here ignoring Munich and Syrianna(another liberal agenda movie with amazing screenplay).

for Rama

“Does the phrase “One man’s Freedom fighter is another man’s terrorist!” hold true? “

Sure, to me it does…atleast the “fighter” part (the cause maybe- freedom for something, freedom from something..or capture something..etc).

I think once place a label/makeup a buzz word- on/for someone like a ‘terrorist’- we ‘dehumanize them’, and we lose all common sense!
And if we keep repeating the word- that seems to be enough to brainwash atleast half or more of the world. And we seem to terrify ourselves more than we terrify the so called enemies (who are usually our “not so long ago friends (and relatives)”…in the case of Israeli-Jews and Palestinians- descendants from the same ancestors..share the same roots)..

How does one stop the ‘vicious cycle’ of senseless violent revenge on all sides? If one wants to protect their family/community/country- one has to have the courage to break the cycle…(if nothing else purely for one’s own self-interests).. in the end..the only true revolutions which have really ‘worked’ for “grand social change” were those which were created by non-violent methods and means.

Anyways, look forward to watching ‘Munich’.
(I am sure the American media- would rather promote and glorify King Kong or another fake horror flick!).

Maria
