Runway - a Malayalam movie music sorta-review

Watched a Malayalam movie recently called “Runway”. The movie itself was forgettable. But the music was a nice surprise . For better or worse, I think the attempts by the music industry in its northern neighbor to “contemporize” has rubbed off in Kerala’s music as well - songs like “Lajjavathiye” & then the music in this movie. I haven’t been following Mallu movies for a while now, so I don’t know if this is a trend. But I’ve always associated Mallu movie tunes with the likes of the awesome classical-based music in movies like “Bharatham” & “His Highness Abdullah”. So the new music comes as a surprise to me.

Check out the songs “Nadiye”, “Pulariyil” if you’re looking for something new to listen to - they’re not just contemporary, but wonderful melodies as well.

Add a fairly capable finger-snapping Dabbanguthu attempt “Osalama Ayilesa”.

And another song, repeated twice, called “Minnara Ponnalle” the first time & then “Shaba Shaba” in its second avatar. I’ve heard multiple variations of similar-sounding songs from guys like Harris Jeyaraj in Tamil movies (right down to, from whatever little Malayalam I know, some pretty intellectual lyrics Sticking out tongue) so nothing new here. But a foot-tapper nevertheless.

BTW, the music is by Suresh Peters (yes, the same guy who’s sung some super-hit Tamil songs for AR Rahman in the past, like the one from “Kaadhalan”).

Enjoy Smiling

now that

now that i am taking in all things mallu, excepting the likes of karimeen, this comes in good. however, if this is a trend in the mallu films, i’d hope it is just that and directors will revert back to the classical based music.
