Scene: A pizza café

Black Girl: Do you know what I saw the other night on LinkTV?
White Girl: What?
Black Girl: You know that station is so good…it’s like my favorite station to watch in the middle of the night now. There’s always something really good on; the other night I saw this documentary on Caetano Veloso–
White Girl: What’s that?
Black Girl: Who…who is that.
White Girl: Well, what or WHO is that?
Black Girl: A man. Anyway–really good stuff comes on there all the time and the other night–
White girl: Yeah? (she man-handles enormous Sicilian slice of pizza, preparing for a bite)
Black Girl: A documentary about these Black Britishers who had their DNA sequenced so that they could try to pinpoint just one place in Africa where they might have had an ancestor.
White Girl: That sounds interesting. (has actually commenced eating Sicilian slice of pizza)
Black Girl: Yeah, well I read about these geneticists at Howard [University] doing this years ago, too, and it was really fucked up because…(She pauses dramatically and shakes her head, looking down at the table.)
White Girl: Yeah? (chewing, swallowing, biting, chewing…)
Black Girl: …Well…(sighing really big)…it was so fucked up because there is this entire section of people who were–a significant percentage, you know…well…they were actually traced back to places in Europe. The particular ancestor that they were able to single out. But they’re obviously Black.
White Girl: Really?
Black Girl: Yeah, you know, because of how all the European men…you know…
White Girl: Right. Mmmmmm.
Black Girl: Yeah. Fucking Europeans. Damn! Isn’t that fucked up what your ancestors did?
White Girl: Uh huh. (still chewing, swallowing, etc.)
Black Girl: Yeah. Shit was really fucked up.
(Silence between the two of them. Black Girl waits for eye contact.)
Black Girl: Fucking bastards. Damn!
White Girl: I know you’re trying to make me uncomfortable and everything, but you’re not going to stop me from eating my pizza.
