I’d like it if all people who already have logins would begin testing this site by just going around and trying various things. Feedback can be added as replies under this thread so that the thread keeps going.
I feel the homepage is getting too crowded with all kinds of posts showing below each other. Forum topic, blog, poll, album…it would be nice to have sub-sections for each category on the main page’s real estate…or have a static main page with text describing the site while each category needs to be navigated to.
This is for now, to start off this thread.
I liked ..
The mail feature most. Its simple, fast and effective.
You mean...
You mean the “write to author” and “private messages”?
Open a separate topic for providing feedback on specific issues.
I think its better if we can discuss features on separate topics rather than discussing about all the features here. That way we will be having a focused discussions! What say people?
Buddy List
Why should I get to know who are all the buddies of my buddy? This is the feature which was much opposed in sulekha.
Now if you click on your buddy it will show all the buddy details of that person.
Asuph has added me as his buddy. If I click on his name, it will show his buddies ( who may or may not be my buddies) to me, which I think is not correct.
buddy list contd...
I dont understand why we need this buddy list feature! Dont we all know each other very well… so everyone wud be having every other dss member in the buddy list! what a pain to go to each ones profile and add them as a buddy!!
I think we can do without this feature…
And i dont understand the diff between “buddies” and “buddy of”… I have 5 buddies but I am a buddy of only 2!! what abt the other 3 then:(
It only means that ...
other 3 dont want u to be buddy and since u have added them and there is no way there can reject that, they have accepted it with grace
Draft Blogs
It will nice to have drafts option for blogs. If I have buddies, then is all content posted visible to them? not that it matters if they see it. but if some content can be created thats not visible to others, it can be used for drafts mode blogs.
I love the option for editing your comments which blogspot does not have. Its cool.
nice idea, bleu !
dunno if drupal allows this. Blogger has this feature. but the way i operate, all draft blogs reside on the hard disk of my computer until such time i’m ready to post them.
Photo Album
The Photo Album feature could do a little improvement.
There is albums featue but it posts all the pictures on the main page. It will better to have a link to the album with just the first picture. (Like blog titles with just the teaser)
Also inside the album it lists multiple pages (with active links) but all the photos are on the first page! (I am not sure if I have too few photos or if there is a bug there).
The delete photo option can be made easier. right now I have to click on the photo, edit, delete, confirm.
Also guys can you check and tell if there is a limit on file-size of photos that can be posted. does drupal reduce the size by itself? I think, the size can be reduced (if needed) using softwares like picassa before posting.
whats the prob with the html edit features in comments? its not accepting commands for breaking lines? ;p
Photo Album - add foto
I also faced the problem reported by bleu today. Also once we create an album and upload fotos, is there a way to add more fotos to the album. I couldnt find a way to do it.
Adding to existing album
Chander
For adding photos to the exisiting album:
I think this is true. you can go to create albums. use the same album name and include more photos. (bcz I stopped my uploading many times and redid it … and ended up with multiple copies of the same.)
and btw, i wanna know where one of your photos, with the sky and the foggy terrain, was taken.
"Album" module is still in its infancy!
Guys,
We are using a drupal module to provide the album feature. I visited the project site and came to know that the module is still in its infancy. Also there are couple of requests for providing album management i.e. add/delete albums! Now till they implement the features I guess we can disable the album module itself and use the image gallery feature to maintain photos. Well, if you dont like that option we can always create a blog and attach all the photo’s to it!
Hope we will be able to see some improvements in the near future! Also I’ll look into other modules which provide similar features, so that we will not lose out on the ability of features that are already present in other softwares!

buck - use "threaded list - collapsed"
hey buck,
from the comment viewing options at the top of the page, use “Threaded list - collapsed”. this is what you’re looking for, right ?
ssm
thanks ssm
yup…that is what i was looking for…thnx ssm…:-)
nice to see this thread kicking
hey ibl…great idea to create a new forum…others can create new threads on this forum so that all ideas don’t get cluttered under the same initial thread…
as an addtl feedback item, do u think we have the ability to see the threaded view with only the subject lines under each other as threads so that the user can get a high level idea on what is being discussed without clicking on each reply? i saw this on slashdot’s comment feature which is a threaded summary list underneath the article…really cool…would be cool if we could do that too…:-)
i agree - the main page's a little cluttered
buck, i agree - i like the idea of a very simple uncluttered main page too. there’s too much stuff in there now.
and good idea to get the forum started !
asuph, yeah, i turned off the “Smileys”, “who’s new” & “who’s online”. Login, go to “my account” & then click on the “edit” tab for marking some personal preferences.
faq (and piggybacking wiki on it ;-))
With so many features, the new home is going to be confusing for new guys. A FAQ would be a good starting point. But then asking one person to write a FAQ would be killing him/her. I suggest a team approach.
And a members only wiki to get it going
. IBL of course strongly hates wikis, so any sympathizers? SSM!!!!!!!!
In general, I think (although I can’t plead my case well) wiki would be a nice addition to the the toolset here. (I already see IBL furiously writing the FAQ so that this issue is buried for the time being)
cheers,
asuph.
i agree with ssm - no wiki
i think wiki is kinda overkill for this site…that too for the faqs…i agree we need to do it, but we can have a common content page to which ibl gives access to a subset of users who go in and add content when they can…we can set different times so that we don’t overwrite each other’s work…i don’t want to add to ibl’s admin headaches if i can avoid it…:-))
lolunteering
I can help with organising the questions … if you need a hand.
weighing in on the Wiki argument :)
i like the idea of a wiki-style faq, for one chief reason - it’s a collaborative approach to getting things done, spreading information & tips, and all that good stuff. seems to me that something like a wiki represents a low-threshold (read: no-hassle) environment for folks to pitch in. even something as basic as an FAQ needs someone to sit down & write the darn thing, and if all of us have a quick way to add to the knowledge-base without jumping thru hoops, that would be great, wouldn’t it ?
but, on the other hand, IBL has a point. if it’s going to be messy to administer & maintain a wiki, and if there are alternate methods of constructing an FAQ, i guess it wouldn’t be worth it to go the wiki route.
wikis..
Do we really need Wiki in our site? I am a HUGE fan of Wiki, but do not see the relevance here, esp in blogs!! It would be a nice tool to have, but would we be using it really?
why-oh-why wiki?
Man I really hate wiki’s. Not only they are messy, but configuring and maintaining them is also a pain! So, for now I suggest let’s not get our hands dirty with too many things!
BTW, FAQ’s can be maintained by other ways too!
I hope we can experiment with the book feature in drupal!
smileys galore!
These smilieys <==== here on left, are a pain! they just don’t go with the otherwise clean interface of the site. smiley help should be a pop-up, me thinks…
-asuph.
Mark My Words (And then wait …)
Okey!
Ah, I’m about to create a new forum which will let every one know what they can do to turn on/off the various blocks on the side bar!
Submission queue
Why do we need this submission queue feature? I mean, when you read a post, the first thing you would like to do is comment on it, not vote whether its fine or not! So I am not for having this feature..
Will put forth any more comments as and when I come across..
Ciao!
Oh well...
Not all contents go through submission queue. It’s just there for testing purposes. Now I know its a pain to vote on the submission system like that… but when this site is opened for public we need some kinda moderation feature too, so we are just experimenting with it!
DSS Arbits
We can use it to have an inter-dss contest, for especially the slow and low-lying ones, to come out and make an effort ;p and if it comes to that, then everybody can make comments and vote.
Moved to feedback forum...
Buck I thought its a good idea to have a separate forum for this. This way we can have much more focused discussions on particular topics.
