top books of the year

in the swing of the things at the end of the year folks, what would be your top three books you read this year?

Somehow I am not sure as to what recently written books I should pick up so am more comfortable picking stuff from the second handbook shop. new books rarely that get there. last year I was into Indian authors but this year haven’t ventured into any Indian section. my top three are:

Bruce Chatwin’s Songlines (this is about his travels in Australia to know more about Aboriginal Songlines - paths across the country that you know of only if you know the song)

Hindu MetroPlus Playwright award

anyone interested in submitting a play for this?

Himalayan Mis(adventure)

When my friend called early January to ask us if we would like to join them for a holiday in the himalayas, both of us said yes at once. I was sure I would be able to make it but we were not sure if K (my wife) could join us for the entire trip.

along the backwaters...

If a tour operator delivers what he promises, tours will be a success. Doesn’t matter if the tour belongs to the champagne-after-a-tiresome-balooning category or peel-your-own-potato category, tell them what they’d expect in the tour and give them that, the participants will be happy.

Music reviews and a short ramble

I have heard about this movie ‘Godavari’ from my wife. One of her most favourite student has played the ‘second hero’. She was quite unhappy with the whole thing.

Alleppey

This blog will mostly contain pictures and little text. Also, the little text has to do to the fact that nothing much happened at this place other than the group having their first fill of fish. They said, it tasted divine but then the portions were too tiny. Each person could only get a small piece. Unlike other resorts, this one touts itself as an ayurvedic one, and hence stipulates food orders to be made atleast 4 hours in advance. So RJ had to apologise and promised that the next meal will have more fish! And they did. For those wanting to know about the dishes, they were Fish Masala and Fish Fry.

Food tour: The beginning...

Some of you know that I recently guided a group of Dutch people across S.India on a food tour. Here is how the concept started and how the actual tour began…

In Haarlem, last year...

Here are some pictures from my last trip to Europe. The first set are from Haarlem, which incidentally was the first station to be constructed after Amsterdam Central.

George Town Heritage walk

George Town Heritage walk

Madras Day (part 1)

I could attend only two of the many of the functions organised as a part of the Madras Day week. One was a talk by V.Sriram on the “Sabha culture of Chennai’ and another was George town heritage walk, which incidentally was also conducted by Sriram. In this part I write about his talk.

Swahili tale contd...

Here is the next part of my yet-to-see-the-end-of-the-day Lamu travel tale.

Cities in the mind

This morning, thanks to a tiny power fluction that seem to have surprised my UPS as well, a blog that started as comment to Chay vapourised. Determined to put something up today, I completed an old blog and am putting it up.

Gulmohar tree in rain

Few days ago, just as i was making myself a cup of tea it started raining. So took the cup along with some eats and sat in the balcony watching it come down. Right next to our balcony is a Gul mohar tree and it was nice to watch these bright red flowers swaying in the rain with a nice green canopy as a background. Then inspired by Bilbo’s close up shots I decided to experiment the macro function of my camera for the first time.

Kerala Trip photos

hello folks,

here is a link to Kerala pics . I was not sure if I could upload all these pics here and gobble up space.

Arrival of monsoon and other tales

Finally the long awaited monsoon has hit the city. Although I expected a bigger bang, the rain nevertheless has subdued the heat. Now with the levels of moisture in the air reaching sky high clothes will take ages to dry and I will sweat even under a fan. Sadly the coming of the rains will soon end the wonderful mango season we had this year.
